Step 2: Stretch others safely
Force multipliers don’t just protect the team, they stretch it. Safely.
If people don’t grow, they stagnate. If they grow without safety nets, they burn out. Force multipliers see both.
We need a radar for each team member that maps growth edges (skills, scope, influence) and safety nets for each person.
How to use it
- For each team member, note:
- Current strengths.
- Growth edges (technical, relational, leadership).
- Safety nets (backup, coaching, debriefs).
- Identify one “stretch-with-support” opportunity each quarter.
- Let a junior run sprint planning with backup.
- Hand an ambitious IC a cross-team project, with air cover.
- Give someone visibility in front of leadership, then debrief hard.
- Check back after the experiment: did they grow, or just struggle?

This gives you a living radar that shows who’s coasting, who’s straining, and who’s quietly ready for more.
