Relationships don’t maintain themselves. If you wait until you need something, you’re already too late.
Let’s build a single-page map of your circles (inner, middle, outer) combined with a light-touch tracker of relationship health. Think CRM for humans, without the creepiness.
How to use it
This a view of your main People Database but focusing on the rings and direction of travel (in or out).
- Track the state of each relationship:
- Current ring. Has that changed?
- Inner = direct reports, close collaborators.
- Middle = peers, stakeholders, partners.
- Outer = senior leaders, cross-functional allies, Dave in Finance who reimburses your expenses.
- Last Contacted (date).
- Relationship Health (low/medium/high trust).
- Shared Context (what success looks like for them).
- Next Nudge (coffee, thank-you, quick check-in).
- Rotate attention, don’t always talk to the same three people.
- Spot drift early: people sliding from inner to outer circle usually means neglect.
- Review monthly.
Drift Watch
Now you have a living map you can filter by cold or weak ties, to keep you deliberate about maintaining presence before connections fade.
